  • How much does a custom home cost?

The same elements that make a custom build a special, one-of-a-kind home on an untouched piece of property are also what make it a luxury item. Your dream home has never been built before, and your lot likely has no infrastructure and/or needs connections run from the road. Homebuyers should anticipate a minimum starting point of $300,000-$650,000 for a basic or average custom home. High-end custom homes can expect to start at $700,000-$900,000+, as they can have a variety of custom work and styles involved with them. For more information, get in contact with our custom home builders today.

  • How long does it take to build a custom home?

Every custom home builder works differently, however, you can expect the process to take at least a year from the initial meeting to getting your keys. For larger homes or complicated sites, the build may take as long as 18 months. A variety of factors come into play, including a meticulous design process (in which you will make decisions on each element of your home), permit acquisition, site development, and of course the construction itself. There are several variables affecting the construction timeline when building a new home, including weather, material and labor availability, customer changes, etc.

  • What size homes do you build?

While we don't necessarily have a square footage minimum or maximum, most of our homes range between 1,500 and 6000 square feet. It is important to talk to your custom home builder about how the size of your home, both living and non-living square feet, will affect your overall cost to build.

  • What is your price per square foot?

We very well might ask YOU the same question! There are many variables at play affecting the cost when designing and building a new home. Because of this, we don't have a set price per square foot that we charge. Instead, we work closely with you from the start to determine how to get the most out of your budget.

We take a value-engineering approach from the onset of the design phase. At any budget level, this approach ensures you are getting the most important features in your new home all while respecting your stated budget goals.

  • Why is it recommend involving the builder from the beginning of the design and concept process?

We have found that sometimes the preconceived ideas and plans don’t quite meet the reality of the budget. Occasionally, there might be construction issues that do not get thoroughly identified until later in the quoting or construction process.

Therefore, by involving your custom home builder from the very beginning and throughout the design process, we have found that many of these issues can be easily resolved, discussed, and planned for in the initial stages. This then leads to a smoother and shorter build process in the long run and a design specifically tailored to your budget requirements.

  • Can we use our own contacts to supply materials and / or labor during the build process?

We have relationships with the best vendors and sub-contractors in the area that are dedicated to giving us the best service and the best price. These relationships allow us to build you the best home possible, on budget, and on time. But we are flexible and are more than willing to work with your vendors or sub-contactors. They must be fully licensed and insured.

  • What is the difference between a spec home and a custom home?

A spec house is a home built without a specific owner in mind. Its style and product options will be a blend of what the builder believes the market wants. You may be able to choose from a couple of options from provided plan layouts, products, and colors, but otherwise will be limited in your ability to customize. The resulting home can be great, but without being tailored to your wishes and needs, clients often find themselves “wishing” for more. In addition, in many cases, the house will be built to code but without additional thought to comfort, view, or quality. Consider the following questions, all of which you'd have complete say over with a custom home:

    • Where do you want your outlets?
    • Do you have enough lights in the right places?
    • Are your windows the right size to take advantage of your view and do they open the way you want?
    • Will your washer and dryer fit the space?

A custom home is explicitly tailored to you. The process will take you through every decision, from what level of insulation you want to where your outlets are placed to the proper angles and spacing for your dream kitchen to be optimally functional. Every nuance is designed to fit your specific lifestyle when you choose our custom home builders.

  • Can we make changes during the construction process?

While we focus on having all of the selections made prior to construction starting, we realize that changes along the way are part of the construction process. You will be instructed throughout the process by your builder when changes are able to be made. Change order fees can apply for items changed after construction begins.

  • Do you have insurance?

Yes, we are fully insured with general liability and workers' compensation insurance and are fully licensed! DH Building & Son's is your choice for custom homes and home additions.

  • Do you have a warranty?
